It really is happening! I suspect some may have trouble believing it,but we really are going to be moving to a new campus. In just a little over two weeks, on Sunday, June 29, we will have our last worship services at our current site. The following Sunday, July 6, we will gather for worship for the first time in The Spirit Center on New Cut Road.

So much has happened since many of you joined in the celebration brunch and tours at the new building and wondered aloud if it could really be ready in time. This week the last of the floor surfaces are being installed–including the floor in The Spirit Center that must “cure” for 10 days. By next week, the only things left to do will be carpeting the upper narthex (The Gathering Place), finishing up odds and ends and cleaning up. We anticipate having occupancy of the building the week of June 23.

This will give us only about 10 days to move in before the first worship services on July 6, so some things might not be fully in place. We are convinced, however, that we can be sufficiently ready for worship and have decided to move ahead with the previously announced schedule. This also means that Vacation Bible School will be held at the new site, beginning on July 7.

So, buckle your seat belts and prepare for takeoff! We really are going to move. This weekend, if you’re in worship, you’ll receive more detailed information about the plans for June 29 when we’ll participate in a ritual of leave-taking at each service. Following conclusion of the 10:55 service, those who wish can walk–led by the cross–to our new site. Once there, we will have a brief order consecrating the cross in its new location. You’ll be receiving details about shuttle transportation between the two sites and other aspects of the walk.

This Sunday in worship, I’ll be preaching on “Just Doing Our Job,” reflecting on Jesus’ instructions to those who follow him and seeking to help keep our attention focused on the main thing in the midst of all the excitement and stress surrounding our move.

While still disappointed with the delay in getting into our new facility, I’m increasingly recognizing the ways God is continuing to provide for our transition. Over and over again, God is providing the right people in the right places at just the right time.

I ask you to join me in the 100 days of prayer, using each day’s prayer as a means of helping us discern how God is leading us to use these days before our move to prepare ourselves and our church for the great mission God has in store for us in this community.

And, while we’re experiencing a slight delay in completing the Phase 1 construction, we are beginning to see signs that we may be able to move much more quickly to construct the Phase 2 education building than we had previously thought.

While Phase 1 itself will offer us 20% more space than we currently enjoy in all three buildings combined, there are some limitations. Though we’ll be able to seat nearly twice as many folks for worship each Sunday in the large multi-purpose room and use that same space for a variety of activities throughout the week, classes for children and youth will have to be held in rooms that are designed primarily for youth activities. In addition, the music ministry will have to share space in one of the large community rooms, rather than have their own designated space.

Completing the Phase 2 education building will enable children’s classes to meet in rooms designed specifically for their age level, will provide a larger child-care suite designed especially for the needs of infants and toddlers, and provide dedicated space for Glen Mar’s extensive music ministry. In addition, the building will include offices for all staff, as well as for volunteers.

And, best of all, the completion of Phase 2 will enable us to move totally to a single campus, end our lease for which we currently pay $20,000 per month for the Glen Mar Road buildings, and save the costs of paying for utilities and custodial care at that location.

Clearly, being able to move fully to our new site is a great win-win situation for everyone. Over the next few weeks and months we’ll learn more; but it is safe to say that our ability to be on one site depends on a successful stewardship campaign this spring. Already we are taking early steps to assure such a success.

We learned just this afternoon from our contractor that they will not be able to complete our new building in time to allow us to hold our first worship services there on May 11 as planned.  This information is so important, I wanted to share it with you as soon and as directly as possible.  Basically, a number of factors (including weather) have prevented the contractor from closing in the building and making it weather-tight.  That, in turn, will make it impossible to complete the required interior work necessary to assure occupancy by May 1.  At this point it is not possible to know a firm date for completion, but we should be able to share that information within the next two or three weeks.

For now, though, our previously announced timetable will have to be postponed at least several weeks.  Prior to communicating that schedule, we thought we had allowed sufficient time for inevitable delays.  Our judgment, however, turns out to have been incorrect.  I take full responsibility for having communicated a schedule that is no longer accurate.  And, I want to assure you we will not announce a new schedule until we are certain of the dates when occupancy of the new building will be available.

There are really several ways to receive this latest news.  Naturally, I’m disappointed to have to put on hold (once again) the growing excitement I am feeling about our move.  At the same time, having a few extra weeks to get ready can only help us to do a better job when we ultimately do make the move.  After seven years of waiting, another few weeks shouldn’t make that much difference.

If I’ve learned anything during those seven years, it’s that we are not in control of this project.  I’ve learned to trust that everything related to the new building happens in accord with God’s timing rather than ours.   This latest news doesn’t change that conviction in the least.  What it does is to encourage me to pray more fervently and seek to discern how God is calling us to use the additional weeks before our move in ways that best reflect God’s plan for us and for the new facility.

Speaking of prayer, it looks like the 100 Days of Prayer will need to be extended.  Nothing bad about that, though, and I hope you will join me in continuing to pray every day for Glen Mar, for the people who are working to complete our new building, and for the people you will invite to join you in using the building to advance God’s mission in Howard County.

If you’ve driven past our new site recently you may have been amazed, as I have, with how much construction has progressed over the past few weeks. Walls have gone up and exterior panels installed. The building now has most of a roof in place. And, perhaps most encouraging, work is well along on the relocation of New Cut Road.

At this point we are less than 7 months from the time we anticipate holding our first service in the new facility. While there are still many things about which we’re uncertain, I thought it might be helpful to review a few of the things we do know. First, construction is on schedule. This means we expect the building to be essentially finished in April. We’ll then have a month or so to complete finishing touches and furnishing before holding our first worship service.

We expect to worship for the first time in the new facility on Mother’s Day, May 11, 2008. There will be three morning services, at 8:00, 9:15, and 10:55 (continuing our current schedule). Then, since May 11 is also Pentecost in 2008, we will be holding a Confirmation Service that afternoon. Just imagine the thrill of confirming a group of young people on the first day in our new facility! What a great day that will be.

I want to remind you that we will be holding worship services in the multi-purpose room that will accommodate many other types of activities throughout the week. We are making every effort, both in design and in furnishing and decorating the space, to assure that the multi-purpose room provides a worshipful setting. And we’ll be needing teams of people to set up chairs for worship and then take them down each week.

The multi-purpose room will be able to accommodate 600+ people for worship, nearly twice the capacity of our current sanctuary, and to seat approximately 300 at tables for meals or other events. More than three times the number of parking spaces will be available after this first phase of construction, with more slated for future phases.

The building we expect to move into in May represents phase 1 of what will likely be a 4-phase construction project. The Phase 1 building includes the multi-purpose room, kitchen, child care facilities, a large narthex (larger than our current sanctuary) for gathering and other activities, as well as storage on the upper level. The lower level of the building includes classrooms for children, youth, and adults. Several of the rooms are very large (roughly the size of our current fellowship hall), and can be used as one large space or subdivided into several smaller rooms as needed.

This first phase building includes approximately 33,000 square feet of space. This compares to about 27,000 square feet provided by all three of our current buildings combined. However, in the first phase building there will not be space for the Glen Mar Pre School or for staff offices. These will continue to be housed at our current site at least through the summer of 2009.

Phase two is represented by a 2-story education building with pre-school and early elementary classrooms, an enlarged child-care suite (the phase 1 child care area becomes the music suite in phase 2), as well as offices for all staff. This building contains roughly 20,000 square feet of additional space, making the total of phases 1 and 2 twice the size of our current facilities.

My personal goal is to do everything possible to enable us to begin construction of Phase 2 soon after phase 1 is completed. This depends, though, on a very successful capital campaign in the Spring of 2008. We will need to generate pledges and gifts of at least $3 million in order to be able to begin construction of the phase 2 education building in 2008. This would enable us to occupy phase 2 during the summer of 2009 and totally vacate the Glen Mar Road facility at that time (which would enable us to stop paying rent of $20,000 per month).

While this goal may seem ambitious, I am confident that God will provide for this next step in the same way God has so abundantly provided for our needs at each step along the way. The reason I’m so confident is that I know we are not regarding the new facility as simply a place where we can be more comfortable and spread out a bit more. Rather, our new facility is an instrument for greater ministry–both to our members and to the surrounding community. Many ministries will become possible when we move to the new facility that have not been possible with the limitations of our current site.

In other words, this is God’s building, for God’s mission in the world through us. And that is why I believe God will provide, through us, whatever is needed to enable phases 1 and 2 to be completed by the summer of 2009. Which is, perhaps not coincidentally, when–as you know–I expect to retire.

So, as we look ahead to May of 2008 and beyond, we have much to be excited about, much to celebrate. At the same time, we have many challenges to meet. By God’s grace, for God’s mission in the world, I believe God will provide.

Here is new letterhead for the Pastor’s Ponderings mailings that include Glen Mar’s new logo.

Over the past few months we’ve been working to develop this new logo as part of our ongoing attempts to better present the “face” of Glen Mar to both members and the surrounding community.

I’m deeply grateful to Wendy Baird for the creativity and effort she has put into designing our new logo. You will see that it features a tree, to indicate that Glen Mar is a living, growing organism (not an institution). Also significant are the presence of roots, indicating our desire to be deeply rooted in God, and leaves, indicating our desire for outreach and growth. The three leaves represent both Glen Mar’s three-part mission of Praising God, Growing Disciples, Serving the World, and the Trinity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

No symbol can completely capture the essence of a community as large and complex as Glen Mar. But we believe this new logo does a good job of conveying a sense of who we are and what we are about as a congregation.

We have also sought to keep the design clean and simple (like our 7-word mission statement) and instantly recognizable. Because most people in the community know us as simply Glen Mar Church, that name is prominent. But, because we also want to emphasize that we are a United Methodist Church community, that designation is featured as well.

This new logo will also appear on the October Messenger which is going out next week, as well as on our letterhead and business cards.

My hope is that, like our new facility, this new logo will help us reach more people for Christ, and make a greater difference in the lives of both members and residents of the surrounding community who will more readily recognize and think of Glen Mar Church as a place where they can encounter God, receive help, and be transformed into disciples of Jesus.
